» FBP » English Summary
The Bonino-Pulejo Foundation Culture, scientific research and solidarity The FBP was established in 1973 by Uberto Bonino and her wife Maria Sofia Pulejo as a non-profit organisation devoted to support scientific research, professional specialization and solidarity in the deep South of Italy. After their deaths the Foundation inherited the property of a big newspaper "Gazzetta del Sud", so her broad range of activities was improved thanks to the the funds coming from the editorial enterprise. Since then, the Foundation focused mainly on the endowment of scholarships to further professional studies and research for Sicilian and Calabrian graduates (1.090 in 35 years). The prestigious outcome of its activity has meant that the Foundation has taken on a valid role as a pole of development at the service of the community. The support given to health structures, donating sophisticated equipment is particularly significant. In addition the FBP promoted the institution of a Center of Study and Assistance for long term cerebropathic patients with the University of Messina. The organization is equipped with modern instruments and facilities and established a scientific joint venture with the Neurological Center of Innsbruck. Recentely the Centro Studi Neurolesi received the appointment of IRCCS (Istituto di Ricovero e Cura a Carattere Scientifico). Important experimental work has been carried out in the field of longterm coma patients. Other initiatives such as the rehabilitation of patients affected by multiple sclerosis, have opened the way for collaboration with other European centers. The Foundation is furthermore involved in organizing scientific meetings and congresses on current pressing issues, from astronomy to nuclear physics, from medicine to international politics. Till now about ten Nobel Prize winners have been invited to give lectures. For all this the Foundation has become an important point of reference for cultural and scientific growth in Calabria and Sicily, two Regions which, more than most others, are geographically emarginated, resulting in a negative influence on the development of these areas. The role which the Foundation has played has become even more important today, as multimedia scientific exchages are now a reality. Uberto Bonino and Maria Sofia Pulejo wanted to create or develop a managerial class for the South, professional in all aspects: to select the most deserving students and be prepared to offer them the possibility of specializing in various fields in the most qualified center of research in the world. So it is with great satisfaction that we can say that this commitment has not only been started, but also maintained and expanded. |
